President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi inaugurated the East Nile Monorail project on Tuesday, the first day of Eid Al-fitr.

The project is one of the country’s flagship green transport initiatives, designed to provide a fast, safe, and environmentally friendly alternative to private vehicles, while helping ease traffic congestion across Greater Cairo.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the East Nile Monorail is set to be opened to the public in the coming period. The line extends 56.5 km, running from Cairo Stadium station in Nasr City to the control and operations center in the New Capital.

The monorail fully operates on electric power, positioning it as a low-emission transport solution that supports Egypt’s broader environmental and urban mobility goals.

Officials highlighted several key advantages of the project, including reduced fuel consumption, lower noise levels due to rubber-tired trains, and improved traffic flow as the system runs on an elevated track without occupying road space.

The system is also expected to consume around 30% less energy compared to traditional electric rail systems, while encouraging commuters to shift away from private cars toward public transport.

The launch comes as part of a wider government strategy to modernize infrastructure, promote green mobility, and enhance the efficiency of urban transportation networks.
